Skiathos Island
The island has a north to the southwestern axis and is about 12 kilometers (7 miles) long and 6 kilometers (4 miles) wide on average. The coastline is indented with inlets, capes, and peninsulas. The southeast and southwest parts have gentler slopes and that is where most settlements and facilities are located. The terrain is more rugged on the north coast, with the highest peak at 433 m on mount Karafiltzanaka. The main town is Skiathos, in the eastern part of the island.

Monuments and buildings
The house of Alexandros Papadiamantis, who was born and lived on the island, is preserved in the city of Skiathos. In the port of the city, there is the Venetian Fortress (Bourtzi) on a small peninsula, where today is the Maritime Museum. The primary school of the island, now the cultural center of Skiathos, was built under the supervision and financial support of Andreas Syggros.
